Meet Dr. Chimilar
Dr. J. David Chimilar is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Dentistry, and received his degree as Doctor of Dental Medicine in 1975. He completed his specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Anesthesia at the University of Toronto in 1980. He was the Chief Administrative resident surgeon at the Toronto General Hospital in his senior year.
In 1984 he was granted specialty status certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by the National Dental Examining Board of Canada, and admitted to specialty status in the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
Dr. Chimilar has achieved Assistant Professor status at the University of Manitoba, Department of Surgery. Currently Dr. Chimilar is the Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Surgery at the St. Boniface General Hospital, and the Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Seven Oaks General Hospital. He sits on the Medical Advisory Council at the Seven Oaks General Hospital, and the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation Board of Governors.
He was instrumental in establishing a regional Centre of Excellence for the surgical correction of developmental and acquired dentofacial deformities at the St. Boniface General Hospital. Dr. Chimilar has since transferred this excellence in surgical treatment to the Seven Oaks General Hospital.
On a national scale, Dr. Chimilar has served on the Executive Council of the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and was the Convention Chairman of the Annual Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Provincially he has served as an Executive in the Manitoba Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and on several committees representing his speciality at the Manitoba Dental Association. Dr. Chimilar has enjoyed making many scientific presentations and lectures to his colleagues.
In 2006, Dr. Chimilar was accorded Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He maintains an active role in the Oral Diagnosis Study Club, with yearly presentations to his study group.
In his home city of Winnipeg, Dr. Chimilar served the business community as a member of the Board of Governors of the Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone.
Dr. Chimilar is an avid golfer and curler. He has been a member of his Golf and Country Club since 1983 and has served on several Committees and on the Board of Governors. He has curled in his community Curling Club since 1986.
He is fortunate to enjoy excellent health and maintains a stringent fitness regiment.
